Have you ever experienced swimming in an underground cave? Well, in Tulum, Mexico, you can. In fact, there are various types of swimming holes (cenotes) in the area that range from totally underground to fully exposed.
Cenotes, pronounced Seh-NO-Tays, are essentially water-filled sinkholes made out of crumbling limestone. These beautiful hideaways are often formed when caves collapse upon themselves and expose the cooling groundwater flowing underneath. To the Mayans, these locations were often used as a source of water or even a location for religious practices.
Today, visitors of the Yucatan Peninsula are welcome to take a tour with an experienced guide and enjoy a refreshing dip in the cool emerald green water.
